The Glaxo Building was one of the first research facilities on the UNC campus, and has a long history of important scientific research. Glaxo is currently being renovated from floor to rooftop, which will make the space even nicer. Glaxo houses the UNC Microarray Core Facility (one of only ten NHLBI Shared Microarray Facilities in the nation) and is the home for a 12 Tesla FT-ICR mass spectrometer (one of the few in the world).

Directions to Glaxo

Driving from RDU airport, take Airport Blvd. to I-40. Take I-40 West and proceed for 10.6 miles. Take exit 273 toward Chapel Hill (54 West). After 2.9 miles, 54W exits to your right after you pass under a bridge. Take the exit to the right, go up the ramp to the traffic signal, and bear right onto 15/501 South. After approximately 1 mile you will come to a large intersection at the second stoplight, Manning Drive. Proceed straight through this intersection. Take the next exit off of 15-501 at the large green sign for Pittsboro/Chapel Hill. (Do not take Old Mason Farm Road, look for an exit ramp.) At the end of the ramp turn right onto South Columbia Street. Proceed up the hill to the first traffic signal, Mason Farm Road. Turn right onto Mason Farm Road. Glaxo is on your immediate left at the corner of Mason Farm Road and South Columbia Street, but is not readily accessible by car. Limited parking may be found along Mason Farm Road. Pay parking for visitors is located at the Ambulatory Care Center directly across Mason Farm Road from Glaxo, or the Dogwood Parking Deck on the left past Glaxo.

Alternate route from Manning Drive: Take Manning Drive off of 15-501/54, up the hill through campus. Turn left at the fourth traffic signal (Neuroscience Hospital will be on your right) onto East Drive, which turns into Mason Farm Road. Follow Mason Farm Road behind the parking decks, and under a pedestrian overpass. Glaxo is at the end of Mason Farm Road just before South Columbia Street. Limited parking may be found along Mason Farm Road. Pay parking for visitors is located at the Ambulatory Care Center directly across Mason Farm Road from Glaxo, or the Dogwood Parking Deck on the right just after the bend in Mason Farm Road.

Driving from Franklin Street/Carolina Inn, follow Pittsboro Street and take the soft right at the bottom of the hill to merge onto S. Columbia Street. Take the first left at the traffic signal onto Mason Farm Road.

Walking from Franklin Street/Carolina Inn, go south on Columbia Street. Cross Manning Drive at the bottom of the hill and continue up Columbia Street. At the top of the hill, look for a squat brick building on your left through a stand of pine trees. That is the Glaxo Building. If you come to a sign for the Ambulatory Care Center, you have walked past Glaxo.
